In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreters speak at the same time as the person they are interpreting: they listen to the message in one language and translate it orally into another in real time. In consecutive interpreting, the speaker and interpreter alternate, meaning that the process takes longer.

Interpreters work from a translation booth, which may be remote or set up at the event venue. The voice is transmitted via receivers or electronic devices. Receivers can transmit via radio frequency waves or infrared light (the latter is ideal for confidential events, as infrared rays don’t pass through walls).
